#TasteTest: Monterey Sisig

For our first #TasteTest “episode” we’ll be trying out Monterey Sisig. I’m a big fan of sisig (especially Manam’s) and in this blog post we’ll check out if Monterey sisig hits the mark.

This ready-to-eat sisig is available at 348 Php/kg. And this one container at 121 Php lead to 4 servings which means it only costs 30 Php per serving.

For this taste test, we’ll be trying out 2 sisig variations: one on the spicier side and the other just purely meaty. Let’s start with the spicy sisig version. For this recipe I only added: onions, red chili, and green onions.

First, I just heat up half of the sisig from the container with no added oil or anything.

When the sisig is hot enough, I just added the onions and chili. And then added an egg afterwards.

Just mix it all up, and we now have our pork sisig, don’t forget to add calamansi!

Verdict: the sisig itself is already seasoned and it’s a bit on the saltier side, too much soy sauce, maybe? The meat is also composed of more innards than actual meat. To be fair, I think it’s decent enough for the price. I think I also overdid the chili because it’s already quite spicy and I added two more red chilis lol.

Since I don’t like that the sisig is mostly composed of innards and liver, for the second variation, I added more pork meat. I also didn’t add anymore chilis, just chopped onions.

I first cooked the added pork in a tsp of oil until golden brown. This will also somehow add a little crispness to the sisig later on.

When the meat is done, I now added the ready-to-cook sisig and just mix them up.

Next, I added the onions.

And finally, the egg. Eggs in sisig are of course optional, but I always put one in mine.

And the final product, ta-da our meaty pork sisig! Comparing the two sisig variants, I prefer the second one because it’s more crispy and of course, meatier. I think adding green chili would make it really good enough.

Overall, if you’re looking for a ready-to-cook sisig (it even is ready-to-eat since you can just heat it up and it’s done), I think Monterey Sisig is okay. Not good, not bad, but sometimes okay is enough especially when you consider that it’s only around 30Php per serving.

There you have it, our first #TasteTest! I’ll try to taste-test more food products in the future, so stay tuned!
