Easy Japanese Recipe: Butadon!

Butadon (aka pork bowl) is one of Japan’s most popular dishes and it is actually very easy to prepare! In this blog post, I’ll walk you through the step by step process on how to make a delicious butadon.

First, let’s go over the ingredients:

  • Pork (200g, sliced into bite-sized pieces, better if in sukiyaki cut or thinly sliced)
  • Onion (sliced)
  • Egg (poached or fried, raw if good quality eggs are available)
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp mirin
  • 2 tbsp sake
  • 2 tbsp water
  • Japanese rice/white rice

Now, let’s start cooking!

1) Cook pork in medium heat and make sure all sides are slightly brown.

2) Add sliced onions.

3) Add 2 tbsp soy sauce and mix.

3) Add 2 tbsp mirin, 2 tbsp sake, and 2 tbsp water.

4) Let the meat absorb the sauce and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes.

5) Prepare the cooked rice.

6) Pour it over the cooked rice including the sauce.

7) Spread the meat and onions so that the cooked rice is completely covered.

8) Add the egg.

And that’s it! You now have a tasty and very appetizing butadon.

Tips:

  • You can mix the sauce ingredients (soy sauce, mirin, sake, and water) in a bowl and pour it in one go.
  • You can just replace pork and you’ll now have gyudon!
  • You can also add spring onions to make it more appetizing.
